• Will there be a public consultation?
  • Will the library be demolished, including its historic facade?
  • Will the Maltings project will cost taxpayers large sums of money?
  • Is there an overall strategy?
  • Q. Will there be a public consultation?

    A.  Consultation will take place on the Maltings project in due course and we fully expect the results to shape the scheme in a similar fashion.

    Q. Will the library be demolished, including its historic facade?

    A.  No such decision has been made.

The historic Cheesemarket facade of the library will be retained within any proposals. The libary has been included within the boundary of the proposed retail-led scheme, which remains at a very early stage.

Relocation of the library would only proceed if the replacement facility meets the council's requirements and that the benefits to the city in commercial, environmental and community terms are proved.

Planning permission will be needed for any scheme and the public will be consulted.

    Q. Will the Maltings project cost the taxpayer large sums of money?

    A. The Maltings development is to be self financing. We expect most if not all of the development costs to be borne by the council's appointed development partner, with very limited cost to the council taxpayer.

The benefits of the scheme when delivered will be significant to businesses and residents alike and help safeguard the city's future as a commercial and cultural destination.

    Q. Is there an overall strategy?

    A. The Vision for Salisbury has been developed over many years as a series of linked and inter-related projects. It has been tested extensively through the planning process and is included within Wiltshire Council's adopted Core Strategy.

The Maltings and project forms an early and important part of this co-ordinated plan. The need to respect and safeguard the historic character of the city is an objective that underpins all the Vision projects.

The city's Civic Society is represented on the Vision Board and has played a key role in the development of the city's emerging Public Realm Strategy.
